NID Card Correction Online in Bangladesh (Step-by-Step Guide 2026)

The National ID card is one of the most important documents in Bangladesh. Many people face problems such as incorrect name, wrong birth date, or wrong address on their NID card.

Fortunately, the Bangladesh Election Commission allows citizens to apply for NID correction online.

What Can Be Corrected in NID?

You can correct the following information:

  • Name spelling mistakes
  • Father or mother name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Photo

Visit the official NID portal and login to your account. Portal link https://www.nidw.gov.bd/

After logging in, you can submit a correction request and upload supporting documents.

Documents Required

Depending on the correction type, you may need:

  • Birth certificate
  • SSC certificate
  • Passport copy
  • Utility bill

Steps to Apply Online

  1. Login to your NID account.
  2. Click Profile Correction.
  3. Select the information you want to change.
  4. Upload required documents.
  5. Submit the application.

After submission, the Election Commission reviews your request.

Processing Time

Usually it takes 7–30 days depending on verification.

Correcting NID information online saves time and prevents unnecessary visits to government offices. Always provide correct documents to avoid rejection.

Laws and Rules for NID Correction

1. Correction of Father’s/Husband’s/Mother’s Name

The following documents (one or more) must be submitted with the application form:

  • SSC/Equivalent Certificate

  • Citizenship Certificate

  • Birth Certificate

  • Employment Certificate

  • Passport

  • Nikahnama (Marriage Certificate)

  • Copy of Father’s/Husband’s/Mother’s National ID Card

Documents attached with the application must be certified.

Generally, the corrected ID card is distributed on the date mentioned in the acknowledgment slip.

2. Changing One’s Own Name

If registered by a nickname or another name, the following must be submitted with the application for correction:

  • Certified photocopy of SSC/Equivalent Certificate

  • For married individuals, a certified photocopy of the spouse’s National ID Card

  • Affidavit executed in a Magistrate’s Court

  • Copy of the advertisement published in a national newspaper

Later, the applicant must appear in person for a hearing with the original copies of the documents.

3. Correction due to Marriage/Divorce

  • To include the husband’s name due to marriage: A copy of the Kabin Nama (Marriage Register) and the husband’s National ID Card must be submitted.

  • To remove the husband’s name due to divorce: A certified copy of the Talaq Nama (Divorce Certificate) must be submitted.

Generally, the corrected ID card is distributed on the date mentioned in the acknowledgment slip.

4. Changing Father’s/Mother’s Name

In case of a complete change of father’s/mother’s name, the following must be submitted with the application:

  • SSC/HSC/Equivalent Examination Certificate/Registration Card

  • Certified photocopy of the father’s/mother’s ID card

  • Certified photocopy of the ID cards of other siblings if parents are deceased

  • Certified copy of any other acceptable document

An interview with the concerned officer of the project office may be necessary.

5. Correction of Date of Birth

For those with educational qualifications of at least SSC/Equivalent:

  • For correction of date of birth, a certified photocopy of the SSC or equivalent examination certificate must be submitted.

  • If the age difference is not abnormal, the corrected ID card is distributed on the date mentioned in the acknowledgment slip.

  • For abnormal changes, it may be necessary to show the original certificate or participate in a personal hearing.

For those with educational qualifications below SSC/Equivalent: For correction of date of birth, documents dated before the issuance date of the National ID Card must be submitted, such as:

  • Service Book/MPO copy

  • Driving License

  • Birth Certificate

  • Nikahnama (Marriage Certificate)

  • Passport copy, etc.

An interview is conducted by the concerned officer/Project Director of the project office, and if necessary, an on-the-spot investigation is carried out through the concerned Election Officer.

6. Miscellaneous Corrections

  • No prefix, title, honorific, etc., can be added before any name on the National ID Card.

  • To mention father/husband/mother as “deceased”, a death certificate must be submitted.

  • If a living father/husband/mother is mistakenly mentioned as “deceased” and correction is needed, a copy of the concerned person’s ID card must be submitted.

7. Blood Group Correction

To include or correct blood group, a medical report must be submitted.

8. Address Correction

  • For address changes, an application must be made to the concerned Upazila/Thana Election Office using Form-13/Form-14.

  • At the project office, corrections are made only for errors in house numbers or spelling in the address, without changing the constituency.

  • For this, documents such as:

    • Copy of a family member’s ID card

    • Gas/Electricity/Telephone bill copy, Tax receipt copy

    • Certificate from the Chairman/Ward Commissioner, etc., must be submitted.

9. Correction/Re-issuance under the Update Program

Those whose names were included in the voter list during the 2009 update program are requested to contact after December 2010 if there are any errors in their National ID Card or if it is lost.

10. Distribution of Corrected ID Card

If the corrected ID card is not collected from the counter within 7 (seven) days of the scheduled distribution date, complications may arise.

11. Issuance of Duplicate for Lost ID Card

  • In case of losing the ID card, a General Diary (GD) must be filed at the concerned police station mentioning the Voter ID/ID number. An application must be submitted on plain paper/the provided form along with the original copy of the GD at the designated counter and an acknowledgment slip must be obtained.

  • The duplicate ID card is distributed on the date mentioned in the acknowledgment slip. If the number is wrong, issuing a duplicate ID card will be time-consuming.

  • If the duplicate ID card is not collected from the counter within 7 (seven) days of the scheduled distribution date, complications may arise.
